Rome and Tivoli

    This weekend my husband and I enjoyed our first get away with each other since his return. We went to Rome and a quaint little town outside of Rome named Tivoli. Yes, we have lived in Italy for about a year and a half and had yet to see Rome. Why? Well we figured we would have plenty of visitors who would want to see it too, however that hasn't been the case. So we decided not to wait any longer! This weekend was extremely fast paced since we only had 1 night and 2 days to do this trip but we got through it and saw most everything!

   Tivoli was our first stop, after driving 6 hours through the famous Tuscany region we reached the first villa that we were to tour. This Villa was named Adriana and was built by Hadrian around 117 AD. The ruins of this villa were spectacular but are only the outer shell of this whole place. However, what was left and the grounds were so beautiful. It is definitely a must see if you find yourself in the area.

 After the tour of Villa Adriana we headed into the actual town of Tivoli to visit the Villa of Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este which is home to a spectacular fountain garden. The beauty of this Villa and it's grounds cannot be captured, everything is just breathtaking.

  And finally (after all those pictures) we made it to Rome! This weekend was quite a busy time for Rome. The Roma Marathon was going on and the first blessing by the new Pope was also happening. Dave and I were lucky enough to see it all! Being in Rome and seeing ruins of our ancient world with every turn made me appreciate the fact that we have been so blessed to live in Italy. It's so easy to forget that we are living right in the middle of what we read in our history books growing up. 

  Witnessing the first blessing by the new Pope was definitely a surprise and such an experience. We were crammed into the crowd among thousands of others but still got to get a glimpse.

Overall our quick trip through Tivoli and Rome was great. The weather, sites and adventures made for a memorable trip! Next up on our schedule is a trip to Kos, Greece. Block leave is quickly approaching and our first few days will be spent with some much needed alone time on the beach :)
